New Headquarters

Deft Dynamics has moved into new headquarters in the Lakeview District of Birmingham, Alabama.

We have been leasing offices in Lakeview for the last five years; the area feels like home with great restaurants, other businesses in the area, as well as easy access to the interstate and airport. We were fortunate to find this new building only a few blocks away that provides comfortable workspace for the team and a well-fitted shop for prototyping and electronics testing. Plus a little space to grow!

Austin Gurley, CEO

The new location has office and meeting spaces, gigabit internet and infrastructure to support it, as well as dedicated spaces for our main focus areas:

Printed Circuit Board Fab

The Printed Circuit Board (PCB) fabrication and testing area is fully equipped to manufacture and validate our PCB designs. We stock a full library of essential passives, ICs, and discrete components. Our PNP machine can support 120 picks per minute – perfect for same-day runs of ten to fifty boards. For higher quantities we have partners ready for scaling production.

CNC Machine Shop

For prototyping new ideas and testing physical systems, we have a small machine shop with a suite of hand tools along with a 3-axis CNC mill and small lathe. With these tools, and McMasterCarr overnight delivery, we can iterate multiple prototypes before a typical fab shop provides a quite. For production of 100 to 1000 parts, and for special coatings, we have a ten-year relationship with an offshore partner whom we trust.

3D Printing Center

No hardware startup team is satisfied without a 3D print lab! To support experiments and more advanced materials, we have a networked Guider IIS that supports 300°C print temperatures – high enough for polycarbonate (PC) and nylon/carbon (PA/CF). A curated set of post-processing tools and treatments allows us to use prints in structural prototypes before moving to machining or molding for production.

Electronics Testing & Validation

To ensure electronic products are robust against real-world use, we have an electronics lab equipped for battery life simulation and prediction, salt-spray ingress rating, and voltage-spike / reverse-voltage tests. For reliable communications design and validation we have created both wired and wireless protocol analyzers.

Advanced Materials Lab

Ongoing internal research on Smart Material Alloys (SMA) actuators is supported by chemical prep, lab furnace treatment, small-scale tensile testing and controls testing in the electronics lab. Commercial applications of carbon-composite materials at Brigand Arms are supported by proprietary molding techniques that we have developed that is effective for structural parts scaling from 1 to 24 inches.
